How to Choose an Industrial Drum Heater Jacket for 30L and 200–220L Drums
Cold temperatures can cause oils, lubricants, resins, adhesives and other industrial materials to become thick and difficult to handle. Pumping takes longer, pouring becomes less predictable, and production can slow while workers wait for a material to reach a usable temperature.
An industrial drum heater jacket provides controlled heat around the outside of a drum. It can help maintain product temperature, reduce the viscosity of suitable liquids and prepare certain low-melting-point materials for pumping, pouring or processing.
Thermal Packaging Solutions supplies heater jackets for smaller 30L drums and larger 200–220L industrial drums. The range includes 200W, 300W and 1,100W models, with analogue or digital controls available depending on the drum size and selected version.
This guide explains how drum heating jackets work, which model may suit your application and what to consider before heating any material.
What Is a Drum Heater Jacket?
A drum heater jacket is a flexible, insulated heating system designed to wrap around a barrel or industrial drum. Retaining straps and quick-release buckles hold the jacket in position, while an adjustable thermostat controls the heating system.
Because the heater wraps around a large area of the drum, it distributes heat across the container instead of applying intense heat at one small point. This can support more controlled warming and help reduce the risk of localised overheating when the equipment is selected and used correctly.
Drum heater jackets are sometimes also described as:
- Drum heating jackets
- Barrel heaters
- Barrel heater jackets
- Drum heating blankets
- Industrial drum warmers
- Oil drum heaters
- 200-litre drum heaters
- 55-gallon drum heaters
Although these terms are often used interchangeably, the heater must still be matched to the dimensions of the container. Check the drum’s circumference and height before ordering rather than relying only on its stated capacity.
Why Heat the Contents of an Industrial Drum?
The viscosity of many liquids increases as their temperature falls. A lubricant that flows freely in a warm production area may become considerably thicker in an unheated warehouse. Resins, adhesives, soaps, coatings, fats and waxes may also become harder to pour or transfer when cold.
Controlled drum heating can help:
- Reduce the viscosity of suitable oils and lubricants
- Make thick liquids easier to pump or pour
- Maintain a required storage or processing temperature
- Protect suitable contents against cold conditions
- Warm certain resins, adhesives, soaps and coatings
- Soften compatible waxes, fats and low-melting-point solids
- Prepare suitable food ingredients for processing
- Reduce production delays caused by cold materials
- Improve material flow during transfer or dispensing
The correct temperature depends entirely on the contents. Always consult the material supplier’s technical information and safety data before applying heat.
A thermostat setting of 90°C does not mean that every material should be heated to 90°C. It also does not guarantee that the complete contents of the drum will reach the selected thermostat temperature.
200W Heater Jacket for Gentle 30L Drum Warming
The 200W drum heater jacket is designed for smaller drums requiring gentle heating, frost protection or temperature maintenance.
Supplier guidance indicates that this model can be suitable for maintaining contents at approximately 40–45°C, depending on the material, fill level and surrounding conditions. Its lower heating output makes it a practical choice when rapid heating or higher contents temperatures are unnecessary.
Typical uses may include maintaining the flow of suitable oils, protecting compatible materials against cold conditions and keeping a product warm between stages of a process.
The 200W heater has:
- 200W heating power
- Analogue temperature control
- An adjustable thermostat range of 0–90°C
- A 240V electrical supply
- An adjustable circumference of 870–1,020mm
- A jacket height of 400mm
- An indicative heating rate of 5–10°C per hour
- An ambient operating range of −20°C to +40°C
- A weight of approximately 1.7kg
Its construction includes a flame-retardant polyester outer fabric and needled polyester insulation.
The stated heating rate is an indicative figure rather than a guaranteed result. The rate achieved in practice will depend on the contents, starting temperature, drum construction, fill level and heat loss to the surrounding environment.
300W Heater Jacket for Faster 30L Drum Heating
The 300W small drum heater provides greater heating output for applications requiring faster warming or higher contents temperatures than the 200W version.
It may be suitable for compatible liquids and low-melting-point materials used at approximately 60–70°C. This temperature guidance is subject to the characteristics and safe operating limits of the product being heated.
The 300W heater has:
- 300W heating power
- Analogue temperature control
- An adjustable thermostat range of 0–90°C
- A 240V electrical supply
- An adjustable circumference of 870–1,020mm
- A jacket height of 400mm
- An indicative heating rate of 10–15°C per hour
- An ambient operating range of −20°C to +40°C
- A weight of approximately 1.9kg
Its insulated construction combines a flame-retardant polyester outer fabric, a silicone-coated glass cloth inner lining and high-density fibreglass insulation.
Choose this version when a compatible material needs more heating power than the 200W model can provide. As with every drum heater, the maximum safe temperature must be determined from the requirements of the contents rather than the maximum setting available on the controller.
Both small-drum jackets are designed for nominal 30L containers. Drum designs can vary, so confirm a circumference of 870–1,020mm and a suitable height before ordering.
1,100W Heater Jackets for 200–220L Drums
Larger containers require a heater designed to cover the increased drum surface. The 1,100W heater jackets fit suitable 200–220L industrial drums and provide controlled heating for compatible liquids and low-melting-point solids.
Supplier guidance indicates suitability for applications requiring contents temperatures of approximately 60–70°C, subject to the material and operating conditions.
Two controller options are available.
Analogue 1,100W Drum Heater
The analogue model offers a straightforward adjustable thermostat. It is available in either 110V or 240V, allowing businesses to select the version that matches their electrical supply and working environment.
The analogue model can operate where the surrounding air temperature is between −20°C and +40°C. This makes it the relevant choice for suitable frost-protection applications in below-zero surroundings.
Digital 1,100W Drum Heater
The digital version provides a clear display that makes the selected temperature easy to read and adjust. This model is available in 240V only.
Its permitted ambient operating range is 0°C to +40°C. It should therefore not be selected for locations where the surrounding temperature may fall below freezing.
Shared 200–220L Specifications
Both 1,100W versions have:
- 1,100W heating power
- An adjustable thermostat range of 0–90°C
- An adjustable circumference of 1,800–1,950mm
- A jacket height of 850mm
- An indicative heating rate of 3–5°C per hour
- A flame-retardant polyester outer fabric
- A silicone-coated glass cloth inner lining
- High-density fibreglass insulation
- An IP54 protection rating
- A 5m power cable
The analogue model weighs approximately 5.4kg, while the digital model weighs approximately 5.9kg.
Always measure the drum before ordering. A nominal capacity of 200L or 220L does not guarantee identical external dimensions for every container.
Analogue or Digital Temperature Control?
Analogue and digital controls provide two different ways to set the heater temperature.
An analogue thermostat offers simple adjustment using a physical control. It is well suited to applications where operators want a direct, uncomplicated method of selecting the temperature. The analogue 1,100W heater also provides a choice of 110V or 240V and can operate in ambient temperatures down to −20°C.
The digital version makes the selected setting easier to read precisely on its display. It can be useful where clear visibility of the set point is preferred. The digital 1,100W heater requires a 240V supply and an ambient temperature of at least 0°C.
The controller regulates the heater rather than directly guaranteeing the temperature throughout the contents. If the process depends on the material reaching a specific temperature, use an appropriate independent method to monitor the contents.
Understanding Drum Heating Rates
The indicative heating rates for the range are:
- 200W small-drum heater: 5–10°C per hour
- 300W small-drum heater: 10–15°C per hour
- 1,100W 200–220L heater: 3–5°C per hour
These figures should be used as general guidance rather than promised heat-up times.
The lower stated heating rate for a 1,100W model does not mean that it is less powerful than a 300W heater. It is designed to heat a much larger drum containing a potentially much greater volume of material. Heating rates for different drum sizes are therefore not a direct comparison of heater power or performance.
Several factors affect how quickly drum contents become warm:
- The type and thermal properties of the material
- The viscosity and density of the contents
- The volume and fill level
- The starting temperature
- The desired contents temperature
- The construction of the drum
- The surrounding air temperature
- Draughts and air movement
- Heat loss through the top and base
- Whether the contents are mixed or circulated
Temperature may also vary within the drum. The material closest to the heated wall may warm before the contents in the centre, particularly if the product is not mixed.
How to Choose the Correct Drum Heater
Begin with the size of the drum and the objective of the heating process.
Choose the 200W 30L drum heater when you need gentle warming, frost protection or temperature maintenance at approximately 40–45°C.
Choose the 300W 30L heater when a suitable material requires faster warming or a higher contents temperature, potentially around 60–70°C.
Choose a 1,100W model for a compatible 200–220L drum. Select analogue control if you need a 110V option, simple physical adjustment or operation in below-zero ambient conditions. Select the 240V digital version when a clearly displayed temperature setting is preferred, and the surrounding temperature will remain at or above 0°C.
Before ordering, confirm:
- The drum’s circumference and height
- The available voltage
- The material’s safe temperature range
- The required contents temperature
- The starting and surrounding temperatures
- Whether the equipment will be used indoors or outdoors
- Whether frost protection or active heating is required
- Whether analogue or digital control is more suitable
- How quickly the material needs to be ready
Custom sizes are available on request for containers that do not match the standard dimensions.
Indoor and Outdoor Drum Heating
The standard drum heater jackets are designed for indoor use. Outdoor operation requires an additional manufacturer-supplied cover.
An IP54 rating protects against limited dust ingress and splashing water, but it does not make an uncovered heater suitable for unrestricted outdoor exposure. Use the correct additional cover and follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions whenever the heater is operated outside.
The surrounding air must also remain within the permitted range for the selected controller. Analogue models can operate between −20°C and +40°C. The digital model requires an ambient temperature between 0°C and +40°C.
For below-zero frost-protection applications, choose a suitable analogue model.
Industrial Construction and Practical Features
All models in the range include wrap-around construction, adjustable temperature control, retaining straps, quick-release buckles, IP54 protection and a 5m power cable.
The heaters are CE and UKCA marked and manufactured in ISO 9001-approved facilities. They are designed for continuous 24-hour operation when installed and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
The extended power cable provides useful reach in factories, workshops, warehouses and processing areas. The wrap-around design also makes the heater relatively straightforward to fit and remove when different drums need to be heated.
These products are supplied without a plug to accommodate different installation requirements. A plug can be requested when ordering for an additional charge. Electrical installation and connection should be completed appropriately for the chosen voltage and working environment.
Safe and Effective Drum Heater Use
Before fitting a heater, inspect the jacket, cable, controls and drum. Do not operate damaged equipment.
Wrap the jacket securely around a compatible container and fasten the retaining straps according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Do not fold or overlap the heated section, and do not cover the jacket with unsuitable materials.
Confirm that the material can be heated safely and select an appropriate thermostat setting. Check the safety data sheet and technical guidance for the contents, paying particular attention to maximum temperatures, ignition risks, pressure and ventilation requirements.
The 0–90°C range describes the settings available on the thermostat. It is neither a recommendation to heat every product to 90°C nor a guarantee that the contents will reach that temperature.
Actual performance depends on the complete application. Monitor temperature where the process demands it, and follow the heater manufacturer’s operating instructions throughout use.
