Insulated Shipping Boxes for Temperature-Controlled Deliveries

Our EcoWool insulated shipping boxes provide a convenient, professional and more sustainable way to transport chilled, frozen, hot and other temperature-sensitive products.

Each packaging solution combines a durable cardboard shipping box with two correctly sized, high-performance EcoWool box liners. The box and liners are supplied together, removing the need to source separate packaging components and helping create a quick, simple and consistent pack-out.

EcoWool insulated packaging suits businesses sending food, pharmaceuticals, healthcare products, cosmetics, beverages, meal kits, and other goods that need protection from temperature fluctuations during storage and delivery.

Available EcoWool Insulated Box Sizes

Our EcoWool insulated shipping boxes are available in five practical sizes:

  • 230 × 230 × 230mm – approximately 12 litres
  • 305 × 229 × 229mm – approximately 16 litres
  • 300 × 200 × 400mm – approximately 24 litres
  • 305 × 305 × 305mm – approximately 28 litres
  • 457 × 305 × 305mm – approximately 42.5 litres

These nominal volumes are calculated from the stated box dimensions. The usable internal space will be lower after allowing for the cardboard walls, EcoWool liners, coolant packs and protective packing materials.

Having several sizes available helps businesses select packaging that closely matches the volume of each shipment. This can reduce unnecessary space, improve packing consistency and help avoid using more coolant or packaging material than required.

When choosing a box, allow sufficient room for the products, two EcoWool liners, coolant packs and any necessary void fill. An unnecessarily large box can contain excessive air space, which may affect thermal performance.

How EcoWool Box Liners Work

EcoWool box liners contain a dense layer of recycled polyester fibres designed to trap pockets of air. These trapped air pockets form an insulating barrier that slows the movement of heat into or out of the package.

The insulation helps protect the contents from changes in external temperature during storage and delivery. This makes EcoWool suitable for chilled, frozen, hot and temperature-sensitive ambient shipments.

Each insulated shipping box uses two EcoWool liners to surround the products and coolant. Correctly positioning both liners creates a protective insulated pack-out inside the cardboard outer box.

EcoWool is passive insulation and does not actively heat or cool the contents. Chilled and frozen shipments must therefore be packed with appropriately conditioned gel packs, ice packs or another suitable coolant.

Recycled and Recyclable Insulation

EcoWool insulation is made using recycled polyester fibres produced from plastic bottles. These fibres are enclosed within a durable LDPE outer film that is waterproof, food-safe and designed to withstand normal packing and delivery conditions.

The finished liners are approximately 15mm thick and provide effective thermal insulation without the bulk associated with rigid expanded-polystyrene packaging.

EcoWool box liners offer several environmental and practical benefits:

  • Made using recycled polyester fibres
  • Manufactured using material derived from recycled plastic bottles
  • Recyclable from home into your home recycling bin
  • Reusable when clean and undamaged
  • Vegan-friendly
  • Odourless
  • Lightweight
  • Waterproof outer film
  • Food-safe construction
  • Manufactured in the UK
  • Recycling services vary between local authorities and commercial waste providers. Customers should check the appropriate recycling route available in their area.

A Sustainable Alternative to Polystyrene Boxes

Traditional expanded-polystyrene packaging can be bulky to transport, store and dispose of. EcoWool insulated shipping boxes are a sustainable, recyclable alternative to polystyrene packaging, combining recycled fibre insulation with a strong cardboard outer box.

Unlike rigid polystyrene boxes, the cardboard boxes and EcoWool liners are supplied flat-packed, helping businesses use warehouse and packing space more efficiently. Packaging can then be assembled as required, making the system suitable for occasional deliveries, growing online businesses and regular fulfilment operations.

The lightweight construction also helps reduce unnecessary packaging weight while providing a clean and professional presentation for the recipient, making EcoWool a practical eco-friendly polystyrene alternative for businesses shipping temperature-sensitive products at any scale.

    Products Suitable for EcoWool Packaging

EcoWool insulated shipping boxes can be used across numerous industries and applications, including:

    • Chilled and frozen food
    • Fresh meat and fish
    • Cheese, cream and dairy products
    • Fresh fruit and vegetables
    • Meal kits and prepared meals
    • Bakery products and pastries
    • Chocolate and confectionery
    • Drinks and specialist beverages
    • Pharmaceuticals and healthcare products
    • Medical and laboratory samples
    • Cosmetics and skincare products
    • Raw pet food and animal supplements
    • Flowers and other delicate goods
    • Subscription-box products
    • Other perishable or temperature-sensitive items
    • Businesses should always confirm that the complete packaging arrangement is suitable for the specific product, required temperature range and planned delivery period.

      Recommended EcoWool Packing Method

A consistent pack-out is important when shipping temperature-sensitive products. The following method provides a general guide:

      1. Assemble the cardboard shipping box.
      2. Position the first EcoWool liner securely inside the box.
      3. Position the second EcoWool liner to complete the insulated pack-out.
      4. Pre-condition the products to the required starting temperature.
      5. Add the products and appropriately conditioned coolant packs.
      6. Distribute the coolant around the products according to your tested packing method.
      7. Add suitable void fill where required to reduce movement and excessive empty space.
      8. Close and securely seal the cardboard outer box for dispatch.

Do not rely on placing all coolant packs in one part of the box unless that arrangement has been tested for your products. The quantity, condition and position of the coolant can significantly influence performance.

      Temperature-Controlled Performance

When used with suitable gel packs, ice packs or other coolants and an appropriate packing method, EcoWool insulated shipping boxes help protect temperature-sensitive products for extended periods during storage and transit

The temperature and duration achieved will depend on factors including:

      • The selected box size
      • The product’s starting temperature
      • The weight and thermal mass of the products
      • The required temperature range
      • The type and quantity of coolant
      • The starting temperature of the coolant
      • The position of coolant packs inside the box
      • The amount of empty internal space
      • External weather and seasonal conditions
      • Delivery route and transit duration
      • The length of time the package remains at distribution depots
      • How securely the liners and outer box are closed

No passive insulated box can guarantee the same performance under every condition. We recommend completing temperature trials using your actual products, chosen EcoWool box, coolant, packing method and delivery route before beginning commercial shipments.

Testing helps confirm that the complete packaging system is appropriate for your required temperature range and expected delivery period.

Each EcoWool insulated shipping box combines a strong corrugated cardboard outer box with two lightweight EcoWool thermal liners.

● EcoWool Insulating Material

Despite its name, EcoWool does not contain animal wool. The insulating layer is made from recycled polyester fibres produced from plastic bottles, making it a vegan-friendly thermal packaging material.

The dense fibre structure traps pockets of air, creating an insulating barrier that helps slow heat transfer and protect products from changes in external temperature.

● Protective Outer Film

The recycled polyester insulation is enclosed within a durable LDPE outer film. This protective covering is:

• Waterproof
• Food-safe
• Lightweight
• Flexible
• Odourless
• Durable during packing and transport
• Easy to wipe clean when suitable for reuse

● Liner Construction

Each EcoWool liner is approximately 15mm thick. The flexible construction allows the liners to fit securely inside the cardboard box and surround the products, coolant and packing materials. Two EcoWool liners are supplied with each box to create a complete insulated pack-out.

● Cardboard Outer Box

The outer box is made from strong, double-wall fluted corrugated cardboard, providing crush resistance and protection during handling and delivery.

The cardboard is FSC-certified, recyclable and biodegradable. Boxes are supplied flat-packed for convenient, space-saving storage and can be assembled when required.
